Mental Disorder: You Are Not Alone

[fa icon="calendar"] Aug 15, 2016 2:48:08 PM / by Ann Lopez Aziz

One in four – is the number of people affected by a mental disorder.

A study done by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) shows that one in 17 people in Singapore have suffered from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) at some time in their lifetime and that MDD is a common mental disorder in the country. It was also reported that "majority of the mental illnesses occured by the age of 29 years". Though mental disorder is more common that we think, most of the people with mental disorders were not seeking help, as stated by IMH.

As per the institute's research, age, gender, ethnicity, education and employment status had a notable correlation to the ubiquity of mental disorders here in Singapore.

The stigma surrounding mental disorders may be the primary reason many are deterred from coming forward for help. However, help comes in numerous forms for those who are not ready to see a "doctor". Opening up to a close family member about your troubles would be a good start. Alternatively, speak with a counselor, a therapist or a life coach as they do offer a "safe space" and non-judgemental environment as well as expertise in combating the "rainclouds".
